From Awareness to Action: Teacher Empowerment for Safe Schools (NEP 2020 & SDGs)
Raj Kumar, a teacher at Government School Bardoh in Jammu, once struggled to address bullying and students’ emotional distress due to limited awareness of child protection systems. His journey reflects the need highlighted in the National Education Policy 2020 for safe, inclusive, and holistic learning environments, aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 4 and Sustainable Development Goal 16.
After completing training from the National Development Foundation on child rights and laws such as the JJ Act and the POCSO Act, he gained confidence in recognising risks, supporting students, and taking appropriate action. He cultivated a safe, trust-based classroom environment and guided fellow teachers to enhance the school’s response system. His transformation demonstrates how empowered teachers can establish child-friendly schools and foster lasting change within the community.
Let us join hands to build safer, more supportive schools where every child feels protected, heard, and empowered to thrive.
